What General Practice Should Be...

DR TIM MERCER

"AI may be transforming many areas of healthcare, but it can never replace the value of a trusted GP who understands the human experience.

I focus on the relationship between health, work, and social life - in areas like chronic pain, insomnia, mental health, and "medically unexplained symptoms" - where patients need more than algorithms.

With a compassionate, pragmatic approach, I help my patients navigate complex symptoms and life challenges that go beyond the clinical data.

I offer personalised care that’s based on listening, understanding, and the continuity of a long-term, meaningful relationship. We're in this together."

Where Did You Meet Me?

If we've met professionally, it could have been in several places:

Of course, I work in my own GP surgery (from 8-630 Tues-Fri), where I see patients on my own list, supervise the work of the other doctors and nurses, and take responsibility for the additional work, such as signing prescriptions, filing results, reviewing hospital letters - along with all of the business and managerial responsibilities that come with partnership!

I currently work within the Extended Access service for Arno & North Coast, and Moreton & Meols Primary Care Networks (PCNs), providing evening and weekend appointments to improve accessibility for patients.

You may also have seen me in the Respiratory Hub or in the GP Out of Hours service, supporting urgent care needs outside of regular surgery times.

Time to time, I'll help out at another local surgery to cover maternity or sickness absence.

Beyond face-to-face interactions, some of you might recognize me from social media.

I share tips, insights, and healthcare content online—most notably on TikTok—where I aim to connect with patients and professionals alike in a more informal and accessible way.

Media Articles

Aside from my TikTok productions, I am also credited with a number of educational and advisory articles across various media outlets.  My writing focuses on practical, patient-centered insights in areas such as sleep, chronic pain, mental health, and the broader impact of health on daily life.  Below, you’ll find a selection of my most recent articles, where I’ve shared my expertise with wider audiences, offering straightforward advice and fostering better understanding of complex medical issues.

Sleep tips: coping when the clocks go back (Metro, 2024)

Modern life is impacting our sleep, counteracting factors are discussed (Echo, 2023)

Carers and those with health conditions have to pace themselves (Various, 2023)

Tech neck, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel, arthritis galore - (MEN, 2024)

My Other Roles and Experience

Outside of my clinical work, I also...:

  • Host and train medical students (from the Universities of Liverpool and Chester)

  • Supervise Foundation Doctors

  • Train and supervise GP Registrars

  • Hold position as a Local Medical Committee member

  • Work as Clinical Digital Lead for our PCN and in the Wirral Place Group

  • Talk and Educate alongside pharmaceutical and devices companies

I am a GP Trainer, mentoring and guiding the next generation of family doctors. As GP Clinical Digital Lead for my PCN, I help integrate technology into everyday practice, ensuring it improves both patient care and staff efficiency. I’m also a member of the Local Medical Committee, representing the interests of GPs in our area, and when I have time I am working on restarting the Wirral First 5 group, a community for newly qualified GPs to connect and support one another.

My journey to becoming a GP has been rooted in the Wirral. I trained in several surgeries across the area, gaining valuable experience in all socioeconomic areas of the microcosmic Wirral peninsula.
Before that, I worked in specialty posts, including women's health, paediatrics, psychiatry, surgery, and various medical specialties in the local hospitals and hospice. These diverse experiences have shaped my holistic approach to patient care.

If you’ve come across my name in a different context, it might be through a news article I’ve contributed to or collaborated on. Below, you’ll find a list of the articles I’ve worked on, showcasing topics that matter to me and the patients I support (and occasionally entertain!)
